Sixth Form Bulletin

4th November 2024

Year 13 Bulletin

Morning all,

A few more opportunities for apprenticeships as well as some other university focused ones that might be worth a look. Please also have a look at the sorts of Bursaries and scholarships that might be available to you - I’ve included ones for the most popular destinations for our pupils over the last few years and will add any others when people start applying and I know where they’re going.

Weekly

Shoutout to the following pupils who had three positive incidents in one day:

  • Saemmul R (LS)

Quote of the week:

"I am always doing what I can't do yet in order to learn how to do it."

Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh wrote this as a response to a friend who criticised one of his early works. It’s the perfect response to anyone who thinks it’s OK to criticise us when all we are trying to do is learn something new.

Key dates and deadline:

  • The Maths Department runs a support session every Wednesday for A Level Maths and GCSE resit support every single Monday.

A few general announcements:

For those interested in a Law Apprenticeship:

Did you know that in Wales, prospective solicitors do not have access to Level 7 apprenticeships? The University of Wales Trinity St Davids wants to change that, but, to do so, they want to hear students’ views through a short survey. To thank you for filling it out - you will be entered into a prize draw to win one of three £50 vouchers! To access the survey in English - click here

UCAS

14 people have now submitted their UCAS applications and 7 have offers and another applicant has an interview lined up; places will become fewer and fewer so if you intend to apply it would be wise to do it soon.

Lots of you still need to complete the Education section of the UCAS application;

  • add your GCSE (August 2023) and AS results (August 2024)

  • Then add the three A Levels you are studying, puttingAugust 2025 as the date and ‘pending’ as the grade

  • Add Advanced Skills Challenge with the date August 2025 and again put pending as the grade.

  • You should be sending your Personal statement to your LC now and looking carefully at your potential choices. Any problems let me know. Even if you do not think you’ll be going to university, please complete this as it’s always an option for you then.

  • Have a look at the virtual work experiences UCAS has on offer

  • It might also be worth checking out these sites which have resources to support you in  making better university decisions:

Bursaries/Scholarships

There is a ‘Blackbullion’ App which tries to ensure students have the best experience when searching and applying to scholarships. If you want scholarship updates for now, you can sign up to their Scholarships Newsletter. There are no costs associated with ANY aspect of the process - it's all completely free https://www.blackbullion.com/register

Those of you applying to Russell Group universities may be eligible for a bursary if you check as well as Swansea having some academic excellence bursaries available. I’ve included some of the universities here that I know people have applied to in the past. It’s always worth checking/applying - the worst that can happen is that you don’t get anything - doesn’t hurt to try! There are lots available which are focused on household income, STEM (women especially) and engineering. See me if you need any help applying for these.
